Obituary for Myrtle M. Johnson

Myrtle M. Johnson, 86, formerly of Atlantic passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa.Myrtle was born March 16, 1917 in Oakfield Township, west of Brayton, in Audubon County to Nels and Hannah (Walter) Hoegh. She was baptized and confirmed in the Oak Hill Lutheran Church. Myrtle was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher for many years. She attended Smoky Hill School and graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1934. She taught rural school in Audubon County for five years. Myrtle was united in marriage to Palmer Johnson on April 27, 1941 at Oak Hill Church. They farmed 34 years southeast of Exira. They were the parents of three sons, Darrell, Jerold and Ronnie. In 1972 they retired from farming and moved to Avoca where she worked at the Avoca Feed Store managed by her husband. While living at the Baptist Home in Harlan, Palmer passed away June 24, 1984. She then moved to Atlantic where she was employed at the Heritage House until retiring. She was a member of the Brayton Lutheran Church and the Church Women (W.E.L.C.A.). Myrtle enjoyed tending to her flowers, crocheting, needlepoint, playing cards and spending time with her family, especially her grandkids, and friends. She also enjoyed baking and her children will greatly miss her surprise bag of molasses crisp cookies on Christmas Eve. Myrtle was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend who's warm hearted smile will greatly be missed.She is survived by one son Ron Johnson and his wife Kim of Atlantic and their five children: Jeremy Johnson and wife Heather of Columbus, WI, Wyndi Adams of Webster City, IA, Heidi Johnson of Cedar Falls, IA, Emilie Johnson of Ames, IA and Jordie Johnson of Atlantic, IA; one daughter-in-law Betty Johnson of Avoca, IA and her two sons, Jon Johnson of Carroll, IA and Jay Johnson and his wife Nanci of Avoca, IA and one sister Vernetta Rhine of Ottumwa, IA; one brother-in-law Lester Johnson and wife Ida of Atlantic, IA; one sister-in-law Betty Ingerslev of Elk Horn, IA and many nieces and nephews.Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Darrell in infancy and Jerry who died in February of 2003; brother Vernon Hoegh and wife Dorothy; sister Erma Van Aernam and husband Chester; brother-in-law Don Rhine; parents-in-law Oluf and Alfrieda Johnson.Funeral Information
