Helen Johnson

Helen P. Johnson, 94, of Lewis, Iowa, and formerly of Atlantic passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at the Exira Care Center.

Helen Pauline was born on June 17, 1923, in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Lars and Minnie (Brehmer) Mikkelsen. She attended school in a one room school house south of Elk Horn, and later graduated from Atlantic High School in 1942. Following high school, she worked at the local mill.

In 1945, she was united in marriage to Martin Uecker. The couple farmed in the Atlantic and surrounding areas until moving to town in 1960. She later worked at the Whitney Hotel for many years. On September 25, 1966, she was united in marriage to Carl Johnson.

Helen looked forward to spring so she could begin planting flowers around her home and start watching the birds gather at her feeders. She sewed her entire life; always available to her family and friends for their various sewing needs. Helen enjoyed taking on the challenge of a puzzle or word search. In recent years, she looked forward to driving around the countryside reminiscing with her devoted companion, Eldon Ericksen

Helen is survived by her daughter, Connie (John Wagner) Uecker of Scottsdale, Arizona; son, Howard (Shari) Uecker of Wisconsin; grandchildren, David Uecker of Oregon and John (Andrea) Uecker and their children, William and Benjamin of Chicago, IL; honorary grandson, Clint and Katie Holtz and their son, Evan of Roselle, IA; step-children, Mary Patch and Bonnie Johnson of Indianola, IA; step-granddaughters, Malinda (Roger) Patch-Gray and Carol (Steve) Patch-Snyder and their children, Alicia and Tristin all of Indianola, IA; companion and neighbor, Eldon Ericksen of Lewis, IA; and many extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; and sister, Ruth Waters.

A Celebration of Life Prayer Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Roland Funeral Home, immediately followed by visitation with the family present. A luncheon will be served from 11:00 a.m. to noon.

Interment will take place in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa at 2:00 p.m.
