James “Jim” Alan Murray, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, Suzy, and son, Michael. He was 69 years old.
Jim grew up in Indianola, Iowa, and spent the last 40 years in Atlantic, where he built a life grounded in love, service, and quiet strength. He retired from the Iowa Department of Transportation in 2023 after a dedicated career.
A gifted handy man, Jim had a knack for fixing things and building with his hands–especially when it came to woodworking. He was always willing to help, whether with a project, a repair, or simply his steady presence. He showed his love through acts of service and sacrifice, always putting family first.
Though often reserved, Jim was known for his dry wit and goofiness, bringing lightness and laughter even in difficult moments. He deeply loved his wife, Suzy, and their bond was a constant source of strength and comfort in his life. He was proud of his family and loved hearing about their lives and adventures.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Suzy Murray; his son, Michael (Christine) Murray; and his grandchildren, Amelia, Oliver, and Eli—who brought him immense joy and pride. He is also survived by his siblings, Bob Murray, Steve (Phyllis) Murray and Michelle (John) Rhode; along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Kay Murray and his nephew, Brian Murray.
Jim’s legacy lives on through the lives he shaped, the love he gave so generously, and the quiet but steady faith he held in Jesus—a faith that guided his life and now brings peace to those who grieve his passing.
The family is not planning any public gathering at this time.
In lieu of flowers (due to allergies) memorials are suggested to the family for later designation toward causes close to Jim’s heart.
Roland Funeral Service is caring for Jim’s family and his arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.
