Janet Hoegh

March 25, 1929 — April 11, 2024

Janet Hoegh

Janet Aileen Hoegh, daughter of James Christian and Meta Marie (Andersen) Jacobsen was born March 25, 1929, in Elk Horn, Iowa.  She died peacefully on April 11, 2024, at the age of 95 in Atlantic, Iowa, at Allen Place under the care of Hospice of the Midwest.

Janet was baptized and confirmed at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.  She attended Rural School Clay #6 and attended Elk Horn Public Schools, graduating in the Class of 1946.  Janet continued her education at Dana College, Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and Luther College and went on to teach seventh and eighth grade and kindergarten and first grade students in Irwin and Tennent, Iowa.

Janet married Leon Hansen Hoegh on April 22, 1955, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Plainview, Nebraska with Pastor Virgil R. Anderson officiating.  They farmed north of Atlantic, raising row crops, cattle and hogs.  Leon passed away on September 21, 2010.  Janet continued to live on the farm where she treasured the wonder of God’s creations, with the comfort and support from her son, Dan and wife, Allison “just down the road” until moving to Allen Place in Atlantic November of 2023.

Janet was a long-time, active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic and was one of the first women elected to church council.  Some notable time and talents were serving as church organist, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, recording the Dial-a Daily Word, and preparing quilts for mission projects.

From her childhood learning she continually sought understanding from scripture and biblical teachings to offer wise insight in faith and life.  She embraced and shared the joy of music, which included playing the piano, violin and accordion.  From the core of her faith, she embodied empathy for those in need of companionship, with a special calling to those residing in nursing homes and letter writing.

She instilled the value of life-long learning by example, with and beside her grandchildren.

Janet is survived by three children, Lynette (Dennis) Lew of Tacoma, WA, Dan (Allison Berryhill) Hoegh of Atlantic, and Thomas (Catherine Rothstein) of Edina, MN; eleven grandchildren, Jillian Hood, Brandon Hood, Ciara Hoegh, Maxwell (Andrea) Hoegh, Eloise (John) Buergers, Palmer Hoegh, Harrison (Maria) Hoegh, Stuart Hoegh, Jeremiah Hoegh, Benjamin (Brittany) Hoegh and Kelsey (Brady) Parks; nine great-grandchildren, Theodore Haas-Hood, William Hoegh, Valentina Hoegh, Roger Buergers, Josefina Hoegh, Charlotte Hoegh, Jacob Hoegh, Evelyn Parks and Isabel Parks; sister, Sonja Switzer of Sioux Center; and brother-in-law, Roger Klopp of LeMars.

Preceding Janet in death were husband, Leon; son, Jerry; son-in-law, Neal Hood; brother, Warren (Gudrun) Jacobsen; sisters, Isabel (Emery) Hoegh and Mary Klopp; and brother-in-law, Dick Switzer.
