Jane Hinman, 88, of Sacramento, CA, passed peacefully at her home in the presence of family, Saturday, January 13, 2024.
Jane Phyllis (Rossi) Hinman was born on February 8th, 1935, to John Peter and Madeline Marie (Bonaguiso) Rossi in Napa, California. Jane was an active, joyful child while growing up next to her first cousins, George, Bill and Claudette, who were more like her brothers and sister. They remained so for the rest of their lives. While living in Napa she attended Napa High School and enjoyed being active in the Glee Club, Pep Squad, Pom Pom Girls, Chorus, Girls State, UPSILON CHI, Rally Committee, Rifle Club, and student council as well as other clubs where she made life-long friends. One day, while riding the bus, she met the “bus driver,” a new JC student, 2 years older than herself, named Delman Duane Hinman. She married that bus driver on May 10th, 1955, on the same day he graduated from Officer Training school in Austin, Texas. Together, Jane and “Del” would have 4 children: David, Theresa, Larry and Brenda. As an “Air Force family,” they would travel around the United States and Europe throughout the 60’s and 70’s, and would eventually settle in Sacramento where Del retired.
Jane was very involved in many civic and religious organizations such as, Christians in Commerce, Marriage Encounter, and worked as a Youth Minister for the Catholic Church and Activity Director at a local Board and Care Center. After Del passed away in 2005, Jane became highly active in Sacramento’s Widowed Persons Association of California (WPAC), where she was a facilitator, Board Member and grief counselor. While at WPAC, she made many dear friends, especially Virgil Goff, her companion who also preceded her in death.
Jane was a fearless friend and follower of Jesus Christ. A devout Catholic, she maintained a close relationship with her Lord and Savior and would not hesitate to share her faith with family, neighbors and often, complete strangers. She would literally walk into a grocery store, meet new people and walk away having made new friends after sharing her faith. And the unique part about it was. . . people liked it! Jane’s faith in Jesus was an inspiring example to everyone in the family, despite denominations. Jane would say that one of her biggest honors was being called “Mom” or “Noni” by people who considered her family. Her loving spirit was infectious and will be dearly missed by this world.
Jane is survived by her sons, David Hinman of Fairfield, CA and Larry (Heidi) Hinman of Atlantic, Iowa; daughters, Theresa (Paul) Myers of Sacramento, CA and Brenda (Sam) Williams of Sacramento; grandchildren, Cameron, Andrew, Adrianne, Aaron, Rebekah, Madeline, John, Danielle, Landon, Delaney, Roland, Michael, Daniel, Doug, Brody and Frank; 19 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Linda Anton; first cousins, Claudette (Doug) Davison and Charlie Rossi; nieces, nephews, many god-children, and those who considered her their mother, grandmother or dear friend.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Delman Duane Hinman; parents; first cousins, George Peres and Bill Hinch; brother-in-law, Larry Hinman, and many other beloved family and friends.
