Jim Poore

Jim Poore, 59, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Saturday, February 26, 2022, at his home.

James Edward was born on November 13, 1962, in St. Clairsville, Ohio, the son of Donald Wilfred and Emily Jane (Emery) Poore.  After his father’s retirement from the United States Air Force in 1978, the family moved from K.I. Sawyer AFB to a farm near where Donald had been raised in Kellerton, Iowa.  Growing up, while living in northern Michigan, Jim enjoyed camping trips with his family and Boy Scout Troop. Jim played football, baseball, wrestled, and ran track while in high school; graduating from Mt. Ayr Community High School in the Class of 1980. Following graduation, he took a few classes at the University of Iowa and realized maybe he wasn’t ready for college so he moved to Texas and started working in the oil fields.  In April of 1982, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in a field artillery unit in Germany.  He shared many stories through the years about all the interesting places he was able to see throughout Europe during this time.  Jim was honorably discharged in April of 1984.  After his time in the service, he returned to the University of Iowa and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Certified Public Accountant certification.

He was united in marriage to Sharene England in 1986, and to this union two sons were born, Andrew and Lucas.  The family lived in Des Moines where Jim worked at a small accounting firm until moving to Atlantic in 1997, to raise their family in a more rural setting.  While in Atlantic, he worked for A.M. Cohron & Son, Inc., Henningsen Construction, and his own tax preparation business.   In retirement, he delivered 100 editions of the Atlantic New Telegraph on a motor route for the last 14 years.

Jim wasn’t one for hobbies, but he did enjoy a good walk.  He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a lively conversation.  His son, Andrew, remembers his dad teaching him to ride a motorcycle and drive a stick shift.  He also recalls making trips to his grandpas to work alongside him and his dad learning what farm life was all about and to the Minnesota Boundary Waters to learn lessons in survival.  Jim was so proud when he was able to travel to Fort Bragg, NC to pin on Andrew’s wings at graduation from Airborne School in the United States Army.  Andrew will always be thankful that his dad was a good example and guide.

Jim is survived by his sons, Andrew Poore of Des Moines, Iowa and Lucas Poore of Oskaloosa, Iowa; brothers, David (Melissa) Poore of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Roger (Anita) Poore of North Augusta, South Carolina; niece and nephews, Katherine, Thomas, Michael, and Steven Poore; and many extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Emily Poore, and the mother of his children, Sharene Culp.
