Obituary for Dal Lavern Huston

DALTON "DAL" L. HUSTON Dal Huston, 85, long time resident of Atlantic, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa. Dalton Lavern Huston was born the son of Willis and Harriett (Crandall) Huston on August 27, 1923 in Hampton, Iowa. He grew up in Hampton where he graduated with the Hampton High School Class of 1941. He then served as a Corporal in the United States Army in the Medical Division during WWII from 1943 to 1945. Dal was cited with a Bronze Star for his heroic achievement during battle. He then received a BA degree in Business at Drake University in Des Moines, graduating in 1949. He returned to military service during the Korean War from 1949 - 1950. Dal was married to Marjorie Marie Miller on November 28, 1953 in Des Moines. The couple was blessed with a family of three children. He worked in Des Moines for a number of years in the Utica's men's department. Upon coming to Atlantic in 1961, he was employed as the assistant manager of The Forum men's clothing store for 20 years until their move to Altoona. He continued his sales career as a sales representative for Monroe Business Systems and also received his real estate license. They returned to Atlantic in 1999. Dal was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed family, golfing, riding horses, bowling, watching football and basketball and square dancing. He was honored to serve as president of Nishna Hills Golf Club. His favorite relaxations included reading Louis L'Amore books, listening to Big Band and Country Western music, old classic cars and pecan pie. Dal will be remembered for being able to laugh at getting saddle sores in Wisconsin Dells when riding a horse double with his daughter, dancing with his wife and daughters, being fun-loving and ornery, stubborn, socializing with friends, watching his grandchildren in their school activities along with horse showing and a devoted family man. His family will always treasure the memories of his blue eyes, his winks, his sense of humor and his sweet smile. His philosophy for life was: "Do things in moderation" and "Whatever you do, give it 110%". His survivors include his wife Marj; son Dennis Huston of Des Moines, IA; daughters Sherry Davis and husband Sam of Adel, IA and Cindy Kool and husband Randy of Adel, IA. Grandchildren: Mandy Grieme, Ashlee Grieme, Jason Kool, Jeff Kool and Jenna Kool along with two great-grandchildren.
