Obituary for
Elaine Huddleson
Elaine M. Huddleson, 92, of Atlantic, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at her home.
She was the daughter of Edgar N. and Hannah K. (Jessen) Petersen, born May 21, 1924, on a farm near Exira, Iowa. She attended rural school near Exira before her family moved to a farm south of Anita. In 1941, she graduated from Anita High School. After graduating from high school, Elaine worked as a hired girl helping in farm households to raise children and assist with household chores. In the fall of 1942, through spring of 1948, Elaine taught country school south of Anita, taking great pride in developing young people. The relationships she established with her students and families continued to the present time.
On June 20, 1948, she married Elba "Pud" Harry Huddleson in Anita. After marrying Elba, she retired from teaching and started her family, raising four boys. In 1967, she went back to school, this time as a cook at Atlantic High School, retiring in 1973. In retirement, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in school activities. Elaine took special pride in seeing three granddaughters pursue teaching careers.
Elaine instilled a love of travel, life-long learning, and family values in her sons. One of her fondest travels was attending the Army Reunions in Lexington, Nebraska with Elba. She looked forward to class reunions at Anita High School, attending many.
As a widow Elaine was independent minded, continuing to live by herself. Thanks to the kindness of neighbors, Cass County Meals on Wheels volunteers, and Paul and Laura and their family, Elaine was able to stay in the home, where she raised her family, until her final day.
Elaine is survived by her sons, Steven (Rita) Huddleson of Phoenix, Bruce (Dianne) Huddleson of Fort Madison, Mark Huddleson of Anita, and Paul (Laura) Huddleson of Anita; nine grandchildren, Alicia (David) Hall, Melissa (Carl) Girmscheid, Sara (John) O'Farrell, Aaron Huddleson, Greg Huddleson, Kathleen (Keegen) Pace, Matthew (Chelsie) Huddleson, Eric (Emily) Huddleson, Misty Huddleson; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Carol Petersen Christensen of Loveland, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers.
Visitation with the family will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Roland Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2016, at Roland Funeral Home with Reverend Melissa Warren with the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic officiating.
Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to Cass County Meals on Wheels, First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, or Anita American Legion Post #210 Scholarship Fund.
