Obituary for Jeanne E. Howorth

Jeanne Elizabeth Howorth, a long time resident and dedicated teacher of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Friday, September 8, 2006 at her home at age 87.She was born to James David and Elizabeth (Whitehead) Howorth on December 18, 1918 in Lincoln, Nebraska. After graduating from Atlantic High School, she received her B.A. in 1940 from the University of Iowa. Upon graduation, she taught in Dallas Center. She joined the Red Cross in 1942 and was sent overseas during World War II and again with the peacetime Army. Upon returning to Atlantic, she worked in the sweet corn factory and at Metcalf's Clothing. During this time, Joe O'Connor, Superintendent of Schools, persuaded her back into teaching. Later Armand Schuler made her head of the English department, and she was the Needle (high school newspaper) advisor for 35 years. She received her M.A. from Drake in 1966. Everything she did was to improve the Atlantic School System and to provide students with the tools necessary to be excellent writers and avid readers. For 36 years, she set the bar high for all her students until retiring in 1983.To many she was known as 'Aunt' Jeanne. She loved and was loved by her extended family. She enjoyed reading a variety of literature and was able to converse on many issues, often lending a humorous slant. She was considered by many to be the ultimate authority in Atlantic (and maybe the world) on usage, structure, and composition. She was a member of the Sarah Circle of United Methodist Women, of Browning Club, and of the Chapter AF of P.E.O. Sisterhood. She served on the Atlantic Public Library Board, and volunteered at the Atlantic Bloodmobile since 1994. She is survived by her nephew, Robert D. Soash, his wife Kim and son Christopher of Edina, MN; Mary Paasch and sons, Cory and Chris of Atlantic.Jeanne is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Dortha McMillen and Ruth Soash Weaver; and Edith Shank, her dearest friend.Memorial services for Jeanne will be Tuesday, September 12, at 10:30 at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic.Funeral InformationIN REMEMBRANCEJeanne Elizabeth HoworthBorn December 18, 1918ENTERED INTO RESTFriday, September 8, 2006At the age of 87 years, 8 months, 20 daysFUNERAL SERVICETuesday, September 12, 200610:30 A.M.First United Methodist ChurchAtlantic, IowaOFFICIATINGPastor Gary DeGeestFirst United Methodist ChurchAtlantic, IowaMUSICAL SELECTIONSAmazing GraceHymn of Promise by the CongregationGoing Home ~ "Ave Maria&"By Pat McCauley and Jan HighfillThe Lord"s Prayer by the CongregationBecause He Lives by the CongregationIt Is Well With My SoulORGANISTMarlene DeGeestINTERMENTAtlantic Cemetery ~ Atlantic, IowaJeanne's family invites you to join them at the church fellowship hall for a luncheon following the memorial.
