James E. Howell
James E. Howell, 78 , a resident of rural Atlantic, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 18, 2003, at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Bud was born March 8, 1925 at Anita, IA. to William and Miriam Alexander Howell. In 1927, the family moved to Rantoul, IL for a period of two years in which time his mother passed away. When Bud was three years old, the family returned to Iowa moving to Berea and later living in the Fletcher Chapel area. He started school there and finished grade school in Lyman in 1939 where his parents had bought a general store. Bud graduated from Atlantic High School in 1943 and immediately entered the military service. Following basic training in Illinois, he continued his schooling at Air Force bases in Illinois, Michigan and Texas graduating in Airways Communications. He was sent to New Guinea, the Philippines and Osaka, Japan. Upon his discharge in 1946, Bud and his high school friend Merrill L. Coon bought a country store west of Griswold, IA. The "Caledonia Store&" was then known as Howell and Coon General Store. In 1948, Bud married Nadine Hallcock at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. In August of 1950, Bud returned to the service being called by the reserves to Korea. Returning to Lyman, Iowa in 1951, Bud bought the Purkiser General Store where he owned and operated a business of groceries, feed, farm equipment and a mobile milling service until 1972. After living in Red Oak, IA. for 3 ½ years, they moved back to Griswold and Bud was employed with the M.P.I. Real Estate Office in Omaha, NE. In 1981 he opened the Howell Real Estate Office in the town of Griswold and owned the real estate brokerage retiring in 2002.Bud attended Sunnyside Chapel in Atlantic and was a member of the American Legion and the Barbershop Quartet. Bud also enjoyed animals and was an avid horseman.He is survived by his wife Nadine; brothers and sisters-in-law Richard and Judy Adams of Greenville, IA., Robert and Jean Kunert of Spencer, IA. and Al and Jayne Hallcock of Las Vegas, NV; several nieces and nephews, Gary A. and Ilene McClusky of San Francisco, CA., James L. and Marion McClusky of Kansas City, MO, Beverly J. and Mark Krukow of Dickens, IA, Steven R. and Nancy Kunert of Cedar Rapids, IA, William J. and Cindy Kunert of Spencer, IA, Robin A. and Brian Miller of Loveland, CO, Dawn M. and Nic Hrabak of Cedar Rapids, IA, Brian E. and Glenda Kunert of Evans, CO, Roxanne L. and Mike Admundson of Fremont, NE, James E and Leslie Adams of West Des Moines, IA, Thomas E. and Mary Adams of Glenholden, PA, Randall R. and Kristi Adams of Johnston, IA, Joleen E. and Pete Phillips of Newton, IA, Carla J. and Thomas Walker of Spencer, IA and Aaron Hallcock Acres and Tara Acres of Parkville, MO; an adopted grandson Michael Baumann of Griswold, IA and his god-son Mason Amundson of Fremont, NE; and several cousins including Juanita Woods of Atlantic, IA, Bernice Herriott of Florida, and Betty Lou and Don Evans of Sumter, SC.Bud was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret McClusky and her husband Sterling McCluskey and his mother-in-law Irene Hallcock.Funeral InformationServices for James (Bud) Howell will be held Saturday, June 21, at 10:30 AM with Lynn Stamp of the Sunnyside Bible Chapel officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery at Atlantic, Iowa.
