Obituary for
Richard "Dick" Howard
Richard “Dick” Howard, 88, passed away Monday, November 20, 2017, at Atlantic Specialty Care.
Dick served four years in the Air Force; a portion of this time he was a cryptographer for the National Security Agency. He graduated law school at the University of Iowa, and was admitted to the Iowa Bar Association on February 3, 1959. Dick practiced law in Atlantic, Iowa, for over 50 years.
Dick is survived by his wife of 34 years, Deanna “Denny” Howard; three daughters, Laura Howard, Jennifer (Jim) Gettier, and Kathy (Mick) Titus; one son, Chris Howard; four step-sons, Edward (Annie) Ritter, Greg (Rhonda) Ritter, Michael (Cindy) Van Patter, and Robert Van Patter; sister, Elizabeth King; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Ruth Howard; sister, Barbara Norman; and brothers, Dale Howard and David Howard.
A Celebration of Life Memorial service, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with Pastor Nancy Jensen of the United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at the Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis. The family invites you to join them after the service for a time of visitation and lunch.
Dick’s request was that memorials be given to the family for later designation to the University of Iowa Foundation or the American Red Cross.
