Marian Holmes

Marian Holmes, 90, died at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, on April 6, 2004 after a short illness. A lifetime Atlantic resident, Marian was born in Atlantic on September 16, 1913 to William and Ruth Nichols Anker, the second of four daughters. While in their teens and twenties, these four sisters sang together for many church and community functions. Marian graduated from Atlantic High School in 1933 and worked for a few years as a secretary for Dick Bell Insurance. She married Norman Holmes, originally from Essex, Iowa on November 14, 1937 and they lovingly established their home in Atlantic for over fifty years. Marian enjoyed being a homemaker and supported Norman in his life long occupation with the Brown Shoe Fit Company, often traveling with him to the many stores throughout the Midwest. To this union were born two sons, William "Billie&" Holmes who died in 1942 at the age of 2 and John David Holmes. Marian was an avid bridge player and golfer, was a talented oil and china painter and enjoyed pastimes of crocheting, sewing and music. She was a life long member of the United Methodist Church of Atlantic and was involved in many church circle groups, was a charter member of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and took great pleasure in participating in many bridge groups. Marian was a loving wife and mother. She will be loved and forever remembered by her family and friends. Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her parents, William and Ruth Anker; her older sister, Mildred Nelson of Hemet, CA; her son Billie; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She leaves to mourn, her son, John and wife Becky of Atlantic; grandson Todd and wife Jill and great-greaddaughter, Sydney Dale of Dallas, TX; step-granddaughters, Jennifer Kischer of Marshalltown, IA and Kristin Kischer of Des Moines, IA; sisters, Doris Cole of Hemet, CA and Dorothy Schwartz of Atlantic; sisters-in-law, Pauline Frizzell of Omaha, NE, Carol Holmes of Longmont, CO and Dorothy Holmes of Essex; and many cherished nieces including Charlotte Madsen, Carol Rork and Garnet Kelly and nephews. She also leaves behind countless other family members and friends who treasured their time with her.Funeral Information
