Obituary for
Jerry D Holliday
Jerry D. Holliday, 79, of Atlantic, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2017, at Cass County Memorial Hospital.
Jerry was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Harold and Hazle (Cornish) Holliday. He spent his early years living in Kansas and Texas, where his father worked. Upon his father's death, they moved back to Bayard, Iowa. Jerry attended Bayard High School where he participated in track and football and was the quarterback on the football team. He graduated with the High School Class of 1955, and later from Wayne State College with a degree in Education. He taught social studies, history and driver's training. While teaching at the Exira Community School, he met his future wife, June, who worked at the Atlantic State Bank, on a blind date. They were married in August of 1968, and moved with his two new step-sons to Brook Park, Ohio, where Jerry was then employed with McGraw Hill. Upon his father-in-law's death in 1997, Jerry and June moved back to their home state of Iowa to help care for June's mother.
Jerry loved to fish and could often be found playing golf, until his health failed. He was a very friendly guy with a great sense of humor, and always enjoyed having a drink or two with friends. He was a Mason for 50 years and was a member of the Atlantic Golf and Country Club. Jerry loved their condo facing the course and always commented on what a beautiful view it was. He was a member of the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis. He also loved to drive and travel, but due to his failing health, he became restricted in his activities, yet he never complained. His last trip to Ohio was to celebrate his granddaughter, Jane's wedding in August of 2009.
Jerry is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, June (Hancock) Holliday of Atlantic; his step-son, K. Richard (Regina) Halleland of Broadview Heights, Ohio; granddaughter, Rachel (Christian) Perez and great grandchildren, Christian and Eve Perez of Strongsville, Ohio; grandson, Rick (Lisa) Halleland and great granddaughters, Shae and Claire Halleland all of Brook Park, Ohio; granddaughter, Jane Horton of Alexandria, Virginia; half brother, Robert (Patrica) Wickwire of Hermosa Beach, California; nephew, Dr. William Wickwire of Hermosa Beach; step-grandson, Nick Ramsay of Streetsboro, Ohio; step-granddaughter, Angela (Joseph) Cosentino of Akron, Ohio; adopted brother, Larry (Judy) Phippen; and many cousins on both the Hancock and Cornish sides.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Holliday and mother, Hazle Holliday; step-son, Scott Halleland; father- and mother-in-law, Clarence W. and Veryle Hancock, and his grandson-in-law, Christopher Horton who was killed in the line of duty as a sniper in Afghanistan.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, Saturday, April 1st at Noon, followed by a buffet luncheon. The family invites those who loved Jerry to share a few words or a little story; he will be greatly missed, but they feel blessed and thankful to have had him for almost 80 years. Memorials may be designated to the family.
