William Courtland Hitt
William Courtland Hitt, 73, of Atlantic, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The son of Alfred Elmer and Roma Nelle (Shelly) Hitt, William was born March 11, 1929, near Massena, Iowa. He grew up in the Massena, Villisca and Oakland areas . He quit school to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon returning, he graduated from Oakland High School in the early 1950s. Bill was united in marriage to Violet (Vi) May Taylor on April 19, 1953 in Treynor, Iowa. Following married, he was employed with Northern Natural Gas. They lived in Greensburg, Kansas and Midland, Texas. He later was an insurance salesman and they lived in Red Oak, Iowa. In the early 1970s, they moved to Atlantic where Bill was employed with Pelgas for approximately twenty years before starting Vi Dan Heating and Cooling Company.William is survived by his wife, Violat Hitt, of Atlantic; three brothers, James Hitt and wife, Sandy, of Jamul, California, Dennis Hitt and wife, Joleen, of Olathe, Kansas, and Darrell Hitt and wife, Nancy, of Arlington, Texas; three sisters, Sadie (Leah) Gaer of Arlington, Texas, Sharon Cremers and husband, Ken, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marcia Hitt of St. George, Utah; four sisters in-law, Lily Palmer of Oakland, Iowa, Rose Allen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Fern Kelsey of Glendale, Arkansas, and Daisy Weimann of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Alfred Daniel (Dan) Hitt, June 26, 1986; and two brothers, Steve Hitt in 1961 and Roger Hitt in 1996.Funeral InformationGraveside services for William will be held at the Fairview Cemetery west of Oakland, Iowa on Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at 11:00 A.M.
