Harold Herman
HAROLD WAYNE HERMAN Harold Herman, 82, lifelong resident of Atlantic, passed on to be with his Lord from the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa on Friday morning, May 8, 2009. Harold Wayne was born the son of Julius Guy and Alice Charlotte (Jahnke) Herman in Atlantic, Iowa, May 13, 1926. He attended elementary and high school in Atlantic and enlisted in the Navy during WWII. He served in the Pacific, Okinawa and Iwo Jima and was honored to witness the flag-raising on Iwo Jimo through a telescope. His ship sailed past the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay at the time the peace treaty was signed. He received Navy Awards and citations, including the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, with two bronze battle stars, and was also awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal. He received his diploma in 2000 from the state of Iowa, honoring students who left high school before graduating in order to enter the military during the war. He was married to Beatrice Campbell in 1946. They had three daughters. Harold was later married to Linda Vargas on September 22, 1977 in Kimballton, Iowa. He accepted Jesus as his Savior in 1973 and he and his wife, Linda have been members of Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic. He was employed with Camblin Plumbing and Heating and Brown Electric and took part in various construction projects. Harold will be remembered for his love of life, which included his enjoyment of black licorice and pickled herring. His hobbies included observing nature; bird watching, wading in the Nishnabotna, rock hunting and collecting bottles. Harold was a lot of fun and made special time for entertaining his grandchildren, singing with them and spinning tall tales to their delight. His survivors include his wife, Linda; his daughters, Pamela (Don) Prall of Atlantic, Deborah Vollmer of Omaha, NE, and Kathleen Galles of Omaha, NE; step children, Mary (Clark) Johnson of Griswold, IA and Gary (Jodi) Vargas of Griswold, IA; grandchildren, Paul Prall of Omaha, NE, Stacia Pross of Lewis, IA, Heather Prall of Atlantic, IA, Melissa Vollmer and James Vollmer of Omaha, NE and Benjamin and Daniel Galles of Omaha, NE, Chad and Matthew Johnson of Griswold, IA; and great grandchildren, Kelsie and Camryn Prall of Omaha, NE, Tony Pross of Johnston, IA, Travis Pross of Lewis, IA, Ashley and Megan Pross of Atlantic, IA and Jiles McCoy of Atlantic, IA; a great great-grandson Jaxon Pross of Johnston, IA; his mother-in-law Theresa Nissen; his sisters-in-law Doris (Danny) Olsen of Van Wert, IA, Jo (Mick) Filsinger of Las Vegas, NV and Terri (Rocky) Martin of Council Bluffs, IA; brother-in-law Allan (Julie) Nissen of Exira, IA; his aunt Evelyn Rossell of Corning, IA; many nieces, nephews and cousins; among many friends, a special friend Bob Voggesser of Atlantic; and his beloved cat Zippy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Eugene Herman in 1940; his stepson Ronald Vargas in 1981; a son-in-law Dennis Vollmer in 1995 and his brother-in-law Keith Nissen in 1993, and his father-in-law Belmond Nissen in 1988. Funeral Information There will be open visitation at Roland Funeral Home from 8:00 to 5:00 daily until his family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, May 12 at Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic. Pastor Don Mclean will officiate. There will be a luncheon in the church fellowship area before a committal service, with military honors, which will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery west of Kimballton, Iowa at 1:00 P.M.
