Darrell Henningsen

Darrell E. Henningsen, 71, of Palo Alto, CA passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2003 at the Stanford Hospital in California.Darrell was born on December 13, 1931 to John and Hilda (Brehmer) Henningsen in Atlantic, Iowa. He grew up in Atlantic and was the youngest of three sons. He graduated from Atlantic High School and then joined the military. Darrell graduated from Colorado State University at Fort Collins, CO in 1956 with a BS in engineering. He stayed in Colorado until late 1959 then joined the army again and moved his family to El Paso, TX. In 1961, he got a job with Lockheed Space Missiles and relocated his family to south California working at the Vandenberg Air Force Base. While he was still with Lockheed, he had the opportunity to work in Kodiak, Alaska. In 1970 he moved his family to north California, the San Francisco Bay area of Palo Alto, where his permanent address remains today. Another opportunity with Lockheed allowed him to transfer to England in 1977, initially with his family, to work and live until 1994. While there he had an occasion to visit a few times with his brother Ronald's eldest son, Doug, who resides in Denmark. Darrell loved traveling and Europe offered him that while working there. In 1994, looking for a change, he transferred to Germany working near the Bavarian border. There he was able to look up family roots and his heritage. He retired in 1998, but chose to still reside there.Darrell is suvived by three daughters, Dana Cherevko of Cupertino, CA, Anna Lee Barnes of San Jose, CA and Erin Henningsen of Boulder, CO; seven grandchildren living in California; one brother Ronald Henningsen of Mesa, AZ; a scattering of aunts throughout the states and several nieces and nephews.Funeral InformationServices for Darrell will be held Monday, November 3, 2003, at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with Reverend Sue Hyndman of the United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.
