Verna Hastings
Verna Hastings, 93, passed away at the Cass County Memorial Hospital April 3, 2003. She was a resident of the Heritage House in Atlantic and lived with Gary and Jackie Muller of rural Griswold the past several years.The daughter of John and Rose Kaiser Winkle, Verna was born on March 10, 1910 near Sanborn, Iowa. She graduated from Melvin High School and was married to Frank Hastings on June 10, 1934 in Sanborn. The couple lived the majority of their married life in Sheldon, where she assisted her husband in the photography business. The family enjoyed their summer home at Lake Okoboji.Verna was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed rollerskating at Arnold's Park, making crafts, playing bingo and cards, and loved being at home. Every one that knew Verna admired her tremendous zest for life! She was best known as "Ammie,&" having acquired the name from her grandchildren many years ago. She was affectionately called "Ammie&" by many.She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Muller and her husband, Gary, of Griswold, Iowa; two granddaughters, Heidi of Kansas City, Kansas and Holly of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandsons, Christopher and Daniel, both of Griswold; a sister, Margaret Rolston of Sheldon; a sister-in-law, Eilene Winkle of Spirit Lake, and a number of nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.Verna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Clarence Winkel and Russell Winkel.Funeral InformationA time of remembrance was held at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 5 at the Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic with Pastor Terry Schoenfeld officiating. A brunch was served in the church fellowship hall and a 3:30 P.M. graveside committal service was held at the Roseland Cemetery. The Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic was in charge of arrangements.
