Eugene (gene) Harris
Eugene (Gene) Harris, age 81, a long time resident of Atlantic passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.Gene was born June 5, 1922 to Earl and Elma Harris of Adair, IA. He grew up on farms north of Massena and Adair. He also lived in Anita before moving to Atlantic in 1958 where he has resided since. Gene graduated from Massena High School in 1940. In August of 1944, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in WWII. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving his country. He received his discharge in July of 1945. Gene was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Goff on September 24, 1945 in Kansas. Barbara passed away August 23, 1978. On March 17, 1984, Gene married Barbara Jean White in Millard, NE. Gene was employed for 25 years with W. R. Grace as a salesman. He also worked in maintenance for 10 years with the American Building Company. Gene retired in 1985. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, a Boy Scout leader and a member of Post 3415 of the V.F.W.Gene is survived by his wife Barbara Jean; three sons William K. (Bill) Harris and wife Marianna of Henderson, NE, Steve R. Harris and wife Gail of Dennison, IA and David E. Harris of Cumberland, IA; three daughters Victoria Ryan and husband Tim of Springfield, MO, Terri Henderson of New York, NY and Angela McCuddin and husband Jeff of Sheldon, IA; numerous grandchildren; one brother Bill Harris and wife Bobbie of Anita, IA; in-laws Donald Peterson of Atlantic, Rhea Harris of Leavenworth, KS, Barbara Harris of Auburn, NE, Ardith Harris ofCarlisle, IA and Herb Cooley of Arizona and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Elma; his first wife Barbara Ann; four brothers Lloyd, Darrell, Larry and Ted and two sisters Lois Cooley and Arthadel Peterson.Funeral InformationServices for Gene will be held Monday, July 28, 2003 at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Don Seeger of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic officiating. The Atlantic Color Guard will present military honors at the Atlantic Cemetery.
