Barbara Ann (Aldag) Havens Harris

Barbara Ann (Aldag) Havens Harris, 83, of Wiota, Iowa passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab in Atlantic, Iowa. She was born south of Wiota on July 23, 1929; the daughter of Otto and Ruth Pont Aldag, Barbara attended schools at Gold Hill, Grove Community, Atlantic High School and Wiota High School where she graduated valedictorian of the class in 1946. She worked at the Atlantic News Telegraph, Atlantic State Bank, Wiota Community School, and Walnut Products where she worked for 25 years. On Feb 6th 1949, she married Donald Havens. To this union was born two children, Nancy & Steven. Barbara was very active in the Wiota community serving on the Wiota City Council, helping with the activities of the Wiota Fire Department, the Wiota Community Boosters, and she was a first aid instructor as well. Barb took an active part in a car wash business.
On July 21, 1984 she married Garald Harris at the Wiota United Methodist Church. In 1986 they sold the car wash business. During the years of '91 and '92, Garald and Barb designed and built a wonderful three-bedroom home in Wiota. In November of '92 Barb and Garald started wintering in Mission, Texas where they vacationed for twenty years.
In August of 2011 Barb was stricken with Mersa while a patient at Creighton Hospital in Omaha an Ailment she never was able to overcome.
Barb is survived by her husband, Garald; her brother, Karl (Lorene) Aldag; children: Nancy (Ted) Sojka of Decorah, Steven (Linda) Havens of Wiota; six stepchildren: Kathy (Ned) Brown of Atlantic, JoBeth (Rich) Scholl of Des Moines, Beverly Heaton of Des Moines, Carol Karns of Des Moines, Peggy (Joel) Berg of Anita, and Gary (Sally) Harris of Des Moines. Also five grandchildren, fourteen step-grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, nineteen step-great-grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents.
Services for Barbara will be held on Thursday, April 18th at 10:30am at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA with Reverend Gary DeGeest of the Wiota Methodist Church officiating. Open visitation will be Wednesday, April 17th 8am-5pm with family meeting relatives and friends that evening from 5pm-7pm. Following the funeral, the committal service will take place at the Atlantic Cemetery and friends and family are invited to a reception at the Wiota Methodist Church afterward.
