JOANN C. HANSEN

JoAnn Catherine Hansen, 78, a resident of Atlantic, Iowa passed away at the Cass County Memorial Hospital early Tuesday morning, October 15, 2013.
JoAnn was born the daughter of Harlan Jennings Smouse and his wife, Catherine (Hofbauer) Smouse February 15, 1935 in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She lived in Carroll, Iowa where she graduated with the Carroll High School Class of 1952.
She was married to Gene Shrader and as a couple they helped her parents operate the Star Line Ballroom north of Carroll. From that venture, one of her favorite memories was that of sitting on the lap of the famous singer, Louie Armstrong, while he was performing there. She was later married to Eugene Hansen and lived in the Denison and Exira areas. She was “Mom” and homemaker—blessed with six children.
JoAnn was an entrepreneur; she moved to Atlantic and attended Iowa Western Community College where she received her bachelor degree in Psychology, and she and Ed Jensen purchased and operated the Western Tavern on Fourth Street in Atlantic.
JoAnn will be fondly remembered as being very humorous, very intelligent, very witty and altogether charming. Her interests have included traveling (visiting her sons in various states), planting flowers and tending to her yard, and cheering the Iowa Hawkeyes on. Besides cherishing spending time with her family, she enjoyed shopping, watching Home Shopping, “chocolate” and taking care of her beloved dog, Emmit.
Survivors include children: Dave of Panorama City, CA and Jeff Shrader and wife Mia of MD; Linda Osborn and husband Lucky of Wiota, IA; Brenda “Susie” Johnson and husband, Dave "Jiggs" Nelson of Atlantic, IA; Rodney Hansen and wife, Andrea of Wasilla, AK; and Ricky Hansen and wife Petra of Phoenix, AZ; and brothers and sisters: Dennis Smouse and wife, Mary of Exira; Gary Smouse and wife, Natalie of Exira; Karen Taggart of Des Moines, IA; and Sheila Heater and husband, Gary of Lake of the Ozarks, MO; twelve grandchildren: Vicki Jo, Harley, Chohee, Jae Sung, Selene, Angie, DJ, Kasey, Tammy, Megan, Joey and Erin; four great grandchildren: Domanic, Chloe, Zander and Rodney; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Catherine and Harlan Smouse; husbands, Gene Shrader and Eugene Harry Hansen; her brother-in-law, Steve Taggart; and her very dear and special friend, Edwin Jensen.
There will be a private family service on Saturday, October 19 at 10:30am at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Father Thomas Dooley will officiate. There will be open visitation from 8 to 5:30 daily through Friday, October 18.
