Obituary for G. Roger Hansen

G. Roger Hansen passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 30, 2015, in Elk Horn, Iowa, at the age of 90.

George Roger Hansen was born June 8, 1925, at his parents home in Cass County, between Wiota and Anita, south of Highway 6. While in high school he had to quit to help on the family farm.

On April 14, 1946, he was united in marriage to Anna Mardell Hoegh at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. They loved each other dearly and were blessed with 67 years of marriage. To this union 7 children were born. The couple worked side by side farming north of Atlantic for 33 years.

Roger and Mardell loved Big Band music and enjoyed dancing to it. They waltzed flawlessly together. Roger could play the drums, sing and whistle beautifully. He and Mardell, who played the organ and accordion, spent many hours entertaining residents at nursing homes. The residents looked forward to their performances and often sang along. Roger was a proud dad, and would do anything for children. He served as their for 4-H leader for many years. Wanting his children to have a little fun he built them a go-cart, a huge monorail from one big tree to another, and also kept a motorized scooter running for all to enjoy. Roger was a talented woodworker, and made numerous items for his kids and grand kids. This included clocks, jewelry boxes, toys, etc. for all to treasure.

Roger was a member of the Exodus Masonic Lodge #342, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and Shriner's of North America. Roger became a Shriner after retirement because of the love and appreciation he had for the organization. He thought a lot of the outstanding care his daughter Darla received when she suffered severe burns.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mardell in 2013; infant son, Steve; and eight siblings.

Roger is survived by his children, Judith Schrader of Elk Horn, Iowa, Ken Hansen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Connie Steen (Scott Marshall) of Greenfield, Iowa, Jeff Hansen of Iowa City, Iowa, Lori (Gary) Boswell of Corning, Iowa, and Darla Hansen of Elk Horn, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step great and step great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Calvin (Phyllis) Hoegh of Elk Horn, Iowa; sister-in-law, Izy Hoegh of Atlantic, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family members.

No visitation with the family is scheduled. There will be open visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Sunday August 2nd at Roland Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2015, at Roland Funeral Home, with Reverend Paul Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Following services at the cemetery the women of St. Paul's Lutheran Church will serve refreshments at Roland's.
