Adella Veryle Hancock
Adella Veryle Hancock, 94, a long time resident of Lewis passed away Thursday evening, January 1, 2004 at the Griswold Care Center. The daughter of Fay Farnham Smiley and Jessie June (Palmer) Smiley, she was born July 25, 1909 in Wright Township and graduated from the Lewis Consolidated School in 1927. Following graduation she worked in Omaha until she returned to Lewis and was employed at the Citizen State Bank. She was united in marriage to Clarence Wilmont Hancock on April 29, 1933 in Omaha, Nebraska. While Clarence was in the service Veryle ran their insurance agency, Hancock Insurance. Later, as it was known as Hancock-Breckerbaumer Insurance, she continued working there and also helped Clarence with preparation of their clients income tax. She was a member of the Lewis United Congregational Methodist Church, and belonged to various clubs, Order of the Eastern Star of Iowa serving as Worthy Matron. She also was the city clerk of Lewis for many years. Veryle enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and traveling. They took many extensive trips abroad. She is survived by a daughter June Holliday and husband Jerry of Atlantic; a grandson Kim Richard Halleland of Brook Park, Ohio; 5 great-grandchildren, Rachel, Rick, Jane, Joan, Scott and 3 great grandchildren all of Ohio, a step-brother Sunny Weis and wife Lee of Atlantic, a number of nieces and nephews.
