Velma Hair

Velma Hair, 71, longtime resident of Atlantic, passed on at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic on Friday morning, December 21, 2007. Velma was born the daughter of James and Ethel (Wymore) Gaines on December 7, 1936, in Atlantic. She graduated with the Atlantic Class of 1954 and received her accountant degree from Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. Velma was married to Kenneth Hair on September 30, 1955 in Avoca, Iowa. The couple lived in Atlantic with the exception of a few years in Thornton, Colorado. She was employed with Blue Star and drove truck with her husband from 1972 until 1992. Velma was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge. She loved to play bingo and enjoyed Monday nights out with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her family will remember Velma for having a big heart and a strong constitution to the end. Their sentiments, "She was a good cook and Sundays used to be a full buffet. Anyone without a place for a holiday dinner, had a place to go, Our House.&"She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Jean White and husband Doug of Atlantic, IA and Kelly Ann McDermott of Froid, MT; one son, Terry Lee Hair of Froid, MT; grandchildren, Desiree Kintyhtt of Froid, MT, Derek McDermott of Council Bluffs, IA, Josiah Hair of Froid, MT, and Matthew Hair of Murphysbourrow, IL; six great grandchildren; her sister, Shirley Lindsey and husband Chuck of Knoxville, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenny; her infant son, Kenneth Garland; and two brothers, Robert "Bob" Gaines and James "Jim" Gaines.Funeral InformationThere will be a 7:00 P.M. funeral on Sunday, December 23 in the Roland Funeral Home and Velma"s family will meet with friends, following the evening funeral, for a visitation from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M. A committal service will be held at the Atlantic Cemetery, in Atlantic, on Monday at 10:30 A.M., December 24, with Pastor Kesterson of the Atlantic First Church of Christ officiating.
