Gwendolyn "Gwen" Jean Johnston

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Jean Johnston, 91, of Atlantic, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Atlantic Specialty Care.

Gwen was born on August 5, 1930, to John and Ruby (Gerhardt) Hansen in their home in Marne, Iowa. As a child, Gwen was very energetic and known to be somewhat of a tomboy.  She was active with friends and family and thoroughly enjoyed attending sporting events including “The Atlantic Run” when Atlantic went undefeated and won the state championship in basketball.

After moving to a small farm outside of Atlantic, she attended Pymosa #8 country school and remained busy providing housekeeping services, selling Watkins and Nutrilite products, raising chickens, babysitting for countless families, raising very large vegetable and flower gardens and making homemade ice cream. 

In her later years, Gwen met and married Glenn Johnston of Audubon, Iowa.  Together, she and Glenn bowled with the neighborhood bowling team and traveled with family and friends to many areas around Iowa and Branson, Missouri.  When they weren’t traveling, they were spending time with family for anniversaries, holidays or just a Sunday afternoon after church.

Gwen will always be remembered for her humble, kind hearted, and hard-working disposition.  She was dedicated to her family, friends and faith in Jesus.

Survivors include her brother, Jerald Hansen of Atlantic; special cousins, Jim Frisbie and Phyllis Pierce of Atlantic; and many other cousins and relatives. 

She is preceded in death by her husband; Glenn Johnston; parents, John and Ruby (Gerhardt) Hansen; brother, Louis Hansen; sisters, Arlene and Mary Hansen; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 5th at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 5th, following the visitation, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, with Pastor Kyle McBee officiating.

Burial will be held in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa.
