Obituary for
Marjorie J. Grayson
Long time resident, Marjorie “Marge” Grayson died October 11, 2016, at Heritage House in Atlantic.
Marge was born on February 7, 1925, in Spring Hill, Iowa, to Homer and Esther (Hansell) Lockwood, the fourth of six daughters. She graduated first in her class from high school in 1942, and attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines. Like other young women of Iowa, past and future, she excelled at basketball. Her expertise was recognized while playing for the AIB team where she earned a position on the All American team. After moving to Atlantic, she worked as an executive secretary at Walnut Grove before becoming an operations manager at First Nebraska Securities, now Stifel-Nicolas, for over 25 years.
She was an avid card player and golfer, who also enjoyed traveling. Marge was a sports fan, hoping for victory for both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones. She was a member of the DOES, the First United Methodist Church and served on the Cass County Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Rolling Hills Bank, the Atlantic Golf and Country Club and Meals on Wheels boards. She loved her family and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s dance recitals and musical events; always cheering, and often sideline coaching, at their ball games.
She is survived by her two daughters, Barb (Mike) Helland of Germantown Maryland and Becky (Jim) Burgart of Council Bluffs Iowa; one step daughter, Jill Kirkman of Lawrence, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Katie and Matt Helland, Jon, Jason and Justin Burgart and Nicolas and Sam Kirkman; five great- grandchildren, Aubrey, Annie, Emma, Lucas and Claire Burgart and Henry Walton; and three sisters, Eunice Chambers of Kansas City, Missouri, Leone Deskin of Harlan and Ruth Merritt of Guthrie Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; and two sisters, Elinor Scott and Hazel Walker.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 11, 2016, at Roland Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service for Marge will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Burial will be held in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Hamburg, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Memorial Hospital Foundation, the First United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan fund at Heritage House in Atlantic.
