Obituary for
Lillian "Jean" (Goff) Miller
Lillian "Jean" (Goff) Miller, 88, of Atlantic, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Allen Place.
Lillian Jean was born on February 9, 1929, in Atlantic, Iowa, one of eleven children born to Wood Willard and Maude Emma (Hughes) Goff. She attended school in Atlantic and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1947.
She was united in marriage to Henry "Hank" Miller on January 9, 1947, in Hiawatha, Kansas. Jean lived in Atlantic for the next 11 years while Hank served his country in the United States Army Air Corps and Air Force. After his honorable discharge the couple moved to Omaha and the Carter Lake areas. While there she sold Tupperware, merchandise for L.B. Price, and worked at the Ames Bowling Center. In 1970, they moved back to Atlantic. Jean was always a hard worker, usually holding down two jobs at a time. She worked at Van's Chat and Chew, Pamida, and as a police dispatcher over the years. After many years in Atlantic, the couple returned to Omaha where they managed apartments for Byron Reed Company. Throughout the year they rented to many jockeys and trainers for AKSARBEN. In doing this she met many new friends, always having an open door for coffee and conversation. She loved to chit chat and be social.
Hank passed way on December 18, 1990, and Jean continued living in Omaha until 1992. Jean returned to Atlantic and began working at the Atlantic Public Library in the children's section. This was a perfect fit for her as she adored children; they made her smile. The word retirement wasn't in Jean's vocabulary as she worked well into her 80's.
Jean loved going to the casino to play the penny slots. She also enjoyed a game of Bingo with family and friends. Her melt-in-your-mouth peanut butter cookies and thick delicious potato salad will be remembered by many and missed at family gatherings. Family was her everything; she surrounded herself with grandchildren as much as possible. She would say they kept her young!
She enjoyed her move to Allen Place, and met many new friends. Jean looked forward to outings they took as a group; the zoo and casino to name a few. It didn't take long for her new friends and staff to realize that she didn't say much, but was sure a jokester.
Jean is survived by her children, Kern Miller and Sam Miller both of Atlantic, Sally Ostrander of Omaha, LuAnn (Scott) Ihnken of Atlantic, Henry Miller, Jr., of Council Bluffs, and Joseph Miller of Omaha; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; brothers and sister, Charles Goff, Robert (Betty) Goff, and Sharon Goff all of Washington State; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry "Hank" H. Miller; daughters, Diana Sue Pearson and Barbara Kathleen Ofert; brothers and sisters, Rosemary Murphy, Sherman Goff, Eldon Goff, Barbara Harris, David Goff, Elizabeth Steen, and Nancy Goff.
