Obituary for
Mary Ann Gettler (Tigges)
Mary Ann Gettler, 91, of Guthrie Center and formerly of Adair, Iowa, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018, at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center.
Mary Ann was born on March 9, 1926, the daughter of John A. and Margaret C. (Mattes) Tigges, on a farm near Dedham, Iowa. At the age of nine, the family moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa. Mary Ann attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Dedham and Annunciation Catholic School in Coon Rapids, before graduating from Coon Rapids High School in 1944.
Following graduation, Mary Ann worked as a bookkeeper and assistant cashier at Armour Creameries in Coon Rapids. Mary Ann married Gerald W. Gettler on May 28, 1946, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. To this union 6 sons were born. The couple farmed near Coon Rapids for several years, before moving to a farm south of Adair in 1949. They retired from farming in 1983, and moved to Anita, Iowa. Years later Mary Ann returned to Adair, and later due to failing health moved to Guthrie Center.
Mary Ann enjoyed playing cards and being active in the Willing Workers Club. Throughout the years Mary Ann and Gerald looked forward to taking trips with her sister and brother-in-law, Coletta and Bill. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Adair, where she was an active member of the CWO. Mary Ann was very proud of her boys and cherished her family very much.
Mary Ann is survived by her sons, Ronald J. and his wife, Ramona of Saratoga, Florida, Thomas G. and his wife, Gina of Adair, Kenneth W. and his wife, Debra of Adair, Mark P. and his wife, Dianna of Harlan, Paul E. and his wife, Marcia of Adair, and John W. of Adair; her grandchildren, Jake, Quinn, Melody, and Harmony Gibson, Jason (Hope) Gettler, Stephanie (Brett) Dorsey, Jessica (Jerrid) Denney, Aaron Gettler, Sarah Gettler, Josef (Hilary) Gettler, Monica (Matt) Fagan, Stacy (Travis) Huss, Victoria (Willie Patti) Elledge, Breanne (Joshua) Johnson, Alyssa (William) Fernandez, Allan and Brett Hopp, Nathan (Lindsay) Gettler, Brett (McKenzie) Gettler, Natalie (Jared) McCready, and Rachel and Caleb Gettler; great-grandchildren, Shy, Brooklyn and Charlie Terry, Molli and Keegan Gettler, Sophie and Blaize Dorsey, Jovie Denney, Grady Gettler, Kylie and Justin, Jr. Elledge, Carley, Belle and Joseph Fagan, Jerzee and Brystol Huss, Morgan Johnson, Zaiden and Avi Fernandez, Avery Gettler, and Gage Gettler; and great-great-granddaughters, Evelyn and Delilah Hinton. She is also survived by her sisters and brother, Leona (Clair) Schmitz of Arcadia, Louise Harrison of Fort Dodge, and Daniel (Sandra) Tigges of Des Moines and sister-in-law, Margaret Tigges of Omaha.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret Tigges; husband, Gerald in 1985; brothers and sisters, John Tigges in infancy in 1931, John J. Tigges in 1997, Gerald Tigges in 1999, Coletta Wood in 1999, James Tigges in 2006, and Rita Knutson in 2017.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 22, 2018, at St. John's Catholic Church in Adair, with Father Ray Higgins, celebrant. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service starting at 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday.
Committal services will be in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Adair.
