Wayne Gaines

Wayne LaVerne Gaines, 87, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The son of Clifford Homer and Elva Jane (Wallace) Gaines, Wayne was born January 4, 1915 in Atlantic where he grew up and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1933. Wayne was united in marriage to Bernice Elizabeth Irish on October 15, 1934 in Atlantic. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Wayne was employed by the Safeway and Super Valu grocery stores as assistant manager. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, the Elks Lodge in which we was Exalted Ruler and he was a member of the American Legion.Wayne is survived by his wife, Bernice Gaines of Atlantic; one son, Jerry Gaines and wife, Marcella, of Atlantic; two daughters, Barbara Gipple and husband, Lewis, of Atlantic and Judy Rumery of Pella, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Ryan Rumery, Travis Rumery, Lu Ann Gipple, Jeff Gipple, Lynda Conrad and husband, Chris, Jodi Rhoads and husband, Jeff, Jerry W. Gaines, Jr., Jay T. Jordan and wife, Teresa, Ron A. Jordan and wife, Ellen, Kim L. Jordan and wife, Bobi, and Jon J. Jordan and wife, Pam; twenty great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Turnure of Atlantic; and a number of other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, James Garland Gaines, Harley L.L. Gaines and Floyd Bruce Gaines.Funeral InformationFuneral services for Wayne will be held at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, Iowa on Friday, August 2, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Sue Hyndman officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
