Jettie Gaines

Jettie Gaines, 93, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the Exira Care Center

Jettie Pearl was born on February 2, 1928, in Nettleton, Mississippi the daughter of Herman and Annie Wilmoth (Waycaster) Schlicht. She was the youngest of nine siblings, known as Tootsie to them, and grew up helping pick cotton and corn on the farm. When the work was finished it was time for a game of tag or “mad dog” as they called it. The family had a nanny whose name was Cassy and they all thought the world of her. Early on Jettie gained an appreciation for music and started singing and eventually learned how to play the guitar from her brother-in-law, Alvie. In 1946, the family moved to Iowa and Jettie started working at the Blue Star Canning Factory. Little did she know that a coworker would be her future mother-in-law, encouraging her son, Harry “Bub” Leonard Gaines to meet Jettie. It was a good match; the couple was married on January 1, 1947, by Reverend Darling at the Christian parsonage in Atlantic. Jettie and Bub looked forward to spending quiet time fishing together on the bank of the Nishnabotna River. Most of their married life was spent in Atlantic except for a short time in North Hollywood, California from 1991-1997. They lived in the same home at the corner of First and Birch in Atlantic for 51 years; rebuilding after the original home was destroyed by a fire.Jettie was a stay-at-home mom, and in later years worked evenings at the Atlantic News -Telegraph.

As a child Jettie was baptized and at the age of 88 was delighted to share her faith and testimony in Jesus Christ by being baptized by immersion on September 11, 2016, at First Church of Christ in Atlantic, where she was a member. She also was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Jettie loved to bowl and she faithfully watched soap operas, especially Days of Our Lives. She was an avid BINGO player, traveling with friends to places near and far. How far, you may ask? Las Vegas and Oklahoma were a few of the stops. Her love of music carried into her adulthood and she looked forward to playing at family gatherings, with her brothers on summer vacations in Mississippi, and with various groups at local events. In Jettie’s eyes there was no time for sitting, she kept busy tending to her large garden which produced gigantic blackberries, shelling hickory nuts, baking, or whatever else she could do to stay productive and on the go. She treasured time with family and reminisced about playing hide and seek with the kids before bed, spending time with the grandchildren which included a few rides in the convertible and on the motorcycle, and going to her uncle’s house in Walnut for a game of washers and homemade ice-cream. Always made from scratch, her apple and peach pies and hickory nut cookies were delicious and a hit at all the family gatherings. In later years she was thankful for the companionship from her dogs, BINGO and Whistle.

Jettie is survived by her daughter, Linda (Larry) Fulk of Hamlin; sons, Herman “Tab” (Rhea) Gaines of Pleasanton, TX and Todd (Barb) Gaines of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren; Scott (Chris) Fulk of Atlantic, Wendi Harrah of Clarion, David Fulk of Dows, Jim (Kristal) Fulk of Atlantic, Jason (Rachel) Fulk of Atlantic, Nicole (Gregory) Holmquist of Everett, WA, Tyler Gaines of Council Bluffs, Jonathan (Jessica) Gaines of Treynor, Rachel Gaines of Council Bluffs, Mary Mills-Foley of Altoona, Natalie (Scott) Suhr of Adair, Joshua (Norma) Gaines of Porter, TX, Megan (Michael) McCarthy of Norfolk, NE and Emily Gaines of Phoenix, AZ; 39 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Annie Schlicht; husband, Harry “Bub” Gaines; son, Harry “Bill” Leonard Gaines III; and siblings, Mable Schlicht, Amanda (Dalton) Snelson, Margaret (Sam) Seymore, Annie May Hodges, John Lee (Virginia) Schlicht, Herman (Frances) Schlicht, Robert (Betty) Schlicht and Alma (Monte) Dillehay.
