Obituary for Bernice Elizabeth Gaines

Bernice Elizabeth Gaines, a long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center on Saturday evening, January 22, 2011, at the age of 94. Bernice was born on October 14, 1916 to Alta Austin and Flossie Agnes (Welch) Irish in Menlo, Iowa. She attended school and graduated at Menlo. On October 15, 1934, Bernice was united in marriage to Wayne LaVerne Gaines in Atlantic, Iowa. Wayne passed away on July 29, 2002. Bernice had been employed by Blue Star to candle eggs, she demonstrated products for Super Value and worked for the News Telegraph inserting advertisements. She enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking and baking, and also bingo, garage sales, dancing and especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. She is survived by her children: Jerry Gaines and wife Marcella and Barbara Gipple, all of Atlantic, Iowa and Judy Rumery of Pella, Iowa; grandchildren, LuAnn Gipple, Jeff Gipple, Lynda Conrad and husband Chris all of Atlantic, Jodi Rhoads and husband Jeff of Ames, Iowa, Jerry Gaines, Jr. and wife Nancy of Omaha, Nebraska, Ryan Rumery of Brooklyn, New York and Travis Rumery and wife Missy of Ann Arbor, Michigan; great grandchildren, Heather Conrad of Atlantic, Brooke Conrad of Omaha, Kourtney and Chelsey Conrad of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Austin Conrad, Trevor Gipple and Saraya Gipple all of Atlantic, Abbey Rhoads of West Des Moines, Iowa and Dustin Rhoads of Iowa City, Iowa; step-grandchildren, Jon Jordan and wife Pam of Wiota, Kim Jordan and wife Bobbi of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Ron Jordan and wife Ellen of Forest City, Iowa and Jay Jordan and wife Teresa of Gretna, Nebraska and many great, great grandchildren. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Wayne; her parents Alta and Flossie Irish; her sister Inez Christensen; her brother Bud Irish; her son-in-law Lewis Gipple; her brothers-in-law Earl Turnure and Gene Christensen and sisters-in-law Maxine Turnure and Ceil Irish.Funeral InformationThere will be open visitation from 8:00 to 5:30 Monday and Tuesday, January 24 and 25, at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic until family will meet with relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Bernice's funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 26, at the Atlantic United Church of Christ.
