Emily "Billie" Cecile Fleming, 74, of Atlantic, passed away at her home on September 29, 2015.
She was born on September 22, 1941, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Andrew and Gladys (Schmitz) Wallen. As a young lady, she moved with her family to Santa Cruz, California, and later to Ventura, California. There she met Donald Fleming and the couple married on September 2, 1961, in Las Vegas, Nevada. To this union two sons, Glenn and Lyle, were born. Her husband was a career Navy man, and she kept the home while he was overseas. That was tough for her, but made her a very independent and strong woman.
Upon Don's retirement from the Navy the family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she became a bundle carrier for the Council Bluffs Nonpareil. She later became a Supervisor in the mail room, and had press credentials to take photos for the newspaper. In 1978, the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa, where one of her first jobs was a Meter Maid for the city. She worked many other places in town and also at the Wiota Steakhouse. Billie was proud that she had worked her way from the stock room to assistant manager at the Stage Store. When her health declined she was forced to retire.
Her most cherished job was raising her two boys. She taught them everything from cooking and cleaning to playing sports. Billie even coached the boys flag football team in Council Bluffs. Without a doubt she was the GREATEST MOM EVER!
In 1984, another highlight of her life happened as her grandson Michael was born and 1987 when her granddaughter Abigail was born. She had a very special relationship with her in-laws, Charley and Opal Fleming. Billie always referred to them as Mom and Dad, and they treated her as their own daughter.
She enjoyed many things in life including, photography, dancing, feeding birds, and enjoyed her cats. But especially enjoyed spending time with her sons and grandson. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and had been a Charter Member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch #276.
Those awaiting her arrival in Heaven are her husband, Don; parents; parents-in-law; sister, Marianne Woodlief; nephew, Dennis Fleming; and a host of brothers-and sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her sons, Glenn Fleming and Lyle Fleming, both of Atlantic, Iowa; grandsons, Michael (Autumn Crecelius) Fleming of Anita, Iowa, and Eric and Spencer Wahlert of Anita, Iowa; granddaughter, Abigail Lambertsen of Kansas City, Missouri; great-grandson, Talon Michael Fleming; great-granddaughters, Ashley, Tatyana, and Kailyana; brother, Andrew (Candi) Wallen of Packwood, Washington; sisters, Iamgene Garcia of Simi Valley, California, Andrea Grimenstein and Claudia Wallen, both of Santa Paula, California; niece, Kenna (Jesse Lopez) Henderson of Omaha, Nebraska; friends, Joan Weirich and Lana Marquez, both of Atlantic, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service for Billie will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 2nd, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Burial will be at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, October 3rd at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah.
