Obituary for Lyle Eugene Esbeck

Lyle Eugene Esbeck, age 82, of rural Atlantic passed away Sunday evening, June 1, 2008, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. The son of Andrew Peter and Katherine Marie (Hansen) Esbeck, Lyle was born October 13, 1925 at his parents home north of Wiota where he lived for 79 years. He was a baptized and confirmed member of St. Paul"s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, a Farm Bureau member and a past Lion"s Club member. He attended Benton No. 5 and Wiota High School. In his school years he participated in Declam and enjoyed the different pieces he spoke onstage. Lyle enjoyed visiting and "joking&" with friends, playing cards, meeting new people (he never knew a stranger) and hearing their stories. He especially enjoyed his coffee friends. Lyle was a lifetime farmer, cattle feeder and had a cow/calf herd. He loved the land and farmed with his brother Kenneth until Kenny"s health deteriorated. On February 17, 1946 he married Jessie Lou Sanders at St. Paul"s Lutheran Church in Atlantic and started farming seven miles north of Wiota. On November 4, 1949 they moved to their present home and have resided there for 59 years. He and Jessie worked side by side in their farming years. Lyle is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jessie; three daughters, Lana Lynn Westphalen and husband Delbert of Atlantic, IA, Patricia Ann Steen and husband Daniel of Gladbrook, IA and Susan Michelle Volk and husband Michael of Indianola, IA; grandchildren, Matthew Westphalen of Atlantic, IA, Mark Westphalen and wife Amity of Peoria, IL, Sarah Steen of Coralville, IA, Andrew Steen of Sioux Falls, SD, Jessica Volk and Jason Volk of Indianola, IA; one great grandchild Zechariah Westphalen; sister-in-law Amber Esbeck of Exira; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and seven surviving cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Katherine Esbeck; twin grandsons, Jason and Jeffrey Westphalen in October 1974; five brothers, Leslie, Orville, Earl, Kenneth and Dale Esbeck; two nephews, Lamar Esbeck and Laverne Esbeck.Funeral InformationServices for Lyle will be held Friday, June 6, 2008, at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Paul"s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating. There is an open visitation at the Roland Funeral Home with the family meeting with friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
