Obituary for
Francis Eugene "Gene" Ehrman
Gene Ehrman, 87, of Atlantic, passed away early Saturday, January 16, at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska.
The son of Theodore and Valda (Shey) Ehrman, Francis Eugene "Gene" was born at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wiota, Iowa. Gene attended school in Wiota, graduating with the High School Class of 1947. After graduation, he helped his father with everyday operations on the family farm. In 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army. Gene served in the Korean War, where he served as a medic in the 25th Infantry Division, 90th Field Artillery. He was honorably discharged in 1953. On July 7, 1956, Gene was united in marriage to Mary Hollinrake at Saint John's Catholic Church in Adair, Iowa. Four children: Mark, Lynn, Rita, and Jim, were born to this union.
Gene operated the family farm north of Wiota, where they had a dairy operation and raised row crops. In 1986, he retired from farming and they continued to enjoy their home on the farm. Mary died March 2, 2010. In 2012, Gene made his home at the Heritage House in Atlantic, until he moved in November of 2015, to Crown Pointe Assisted Living in Omaha.
Gene was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul's Catholic Church, where he served as on the Parish Council. He was an avid reader and history buff and he and Mary enjoyed traveling together. Spending time with his family was a highlight for Gene, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Mark Ehrman of Cedar Rapids, IA, and grandson Ben of Iowa City, IA; Lynn Ehrman and wife, Becky and children Ryan, Dan and Connor of Omaha, NE; Rita Ehrman of Moscow, Russia; Dr. Jim Ehrman and wife, Shelly of Northfield, VT; foster daughter, Shirley Schmitt and husband, Jesse of Marne, IA; nephew Francis Hollinrake and wife, Debbie of Adair, IA; niece, Maureen Sheeder and husband, Dale of Casey, IA and several great nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary, in 2010.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2016, ten-thirty A.M., at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father Chori Seraiah, celebrant. A Rosary will be held Tuesday, January 19, five-thirty P.M., followed by visitation until seven-thirty P.M. at the Roland Funeral Home. Open visitation will be held Monday from eight-thirty A.M. to five P.M. and Tuesday from eight-thirty A.M. to five-thirty P.M. at the Roland Funeral Home. Interment will be in the S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa.
