Dolores “Dee” Hansen, 88, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 23, 2021.
Dolores Rae was born on August 27, 1933, in Cass County, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer Clarence and Alice E. (Wohlert) Thomsen. She attended Atlantic Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1951.
On October 10, 1954, she was united in marriage to H. Herbert “Herb” Hansen at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic. The couple enjoyed dancing, traveling, and many trips to the Ozarks.
Dee worked in Atlantic at Johnson Photography and for many years at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a switch board operator, until its closing. She also worked for a short time at Hensley’s Clothing and Outfitters Plus.
She was an artist, painting several beautiful China pieces and canvases. Dee held an office for many years with the Nishna Valley China Dolls Club. Dee enjoyed tending her flower gardens, quilting and an occasional round of golf. She never shied away from a trip to the casino or a game of cards. She was an avid card player including bridge marathons. Dee was always up for an adventure, and it was always made better when it was with family. There were a few things that were guaranteed when you went on an outing with her; you were going to have fun, there wouldn’t be a lack of laughter, and that her lead foot would get you to your destination in good time. Dee was very social and whatever gathering she was off to she was usually the first to arrive and the last to leave.
Dee is survived by her husband of 67 years, Herb of Atlantic; sons, Steve (Ann Vorthmann) Hansen of Oakland, Mark Hansen of Atlantic and Todd (special friend, Teresa Smith) Hansen of Atlantic; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Ford of Evansville, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Alice Thomsen; son, Jeffrey Hansen; daughter-in-law, Lynda Rhodes; sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene (Fred) Holtz and Lois Jean (Robert) Young; and brother-in-law, Wilson Ford.
Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 30th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 1st at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic.
