Max DeWitt

Max DeWitt, 90, of Casey, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Max Earl was born on March 21, 1930, north of Guthrie Center, Iowa, the son of Charley and Hazel (Duke) DeWitt. The family moved south of Guthrie Center where he attended Thompson Township Country School and helped with daily chores on the farm. He and his brother, Eldon later moved to Omaha and mowed many cemeteries throughout the city. His love of farming brought him back to the area and he and his brother, Charles began farming south of Guthrie Center. Max loved life on the farm! He raised cattle and also planted row crops. His favorite mode of transportation around the farm was on his four-wheeler.

On November 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Dorthy Slater at the Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. In 1952, they moved to the homeplace in Thompson Township, where they raised their family and were still living. Max served as trustee for Thompson Township for several years.

Besides spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, nothing was better than a good trip to the casino. Max was adamant that there was no use for city life unless you were headed to the casino! While there, they usually enjoyed the buffet and then headed off to the slots; he always seemed to have good luck by keeping a keen eye on machines that would reward you the most. Horseshoe Casino was his preferred place but he also enjoyed the horse races and the Winners Circle house slot machine at Prairie Meadows. Max frequented local auctions, rarely missing one, and always found something he needed even if it was just junk in his family’s eyes.

Max is survived by his wife, Dorthy; children, Betty Christensen, Bobby (Carolyn) DeWitt, Barbara DeWitt, and Beverly Larson; grandchildren, Michelle (Ellen) DeWitt and Randy (Melissa) DeWitt; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Anna, Allie and Alyse DeWitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Jack Larson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen (Lyle) Stewart and Ila (Bill) Lassek; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles (June) DeWitt, Eldon (Gladys) DeWitt and Donald DeWitt.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Dalmanutha Cemetery, northwest of Casey, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the family for later designation to the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Adair Fire and Ambulance, or the Casey Fire Department.
