Avis Coomes (Odem)
Avis Coomes, 101, passed away on Saturday morning, June 19, 2004, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa. She was born in Atlantic on October 28, 1902, the daughter of Aden and Eulala (Mills) Odem. She was raised here, attending Atlantic schools and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1921. Avis married Maurice E. Coomes on August 15, 1923 in Atlantic. They farmed 34 years in Franklin township then moved into Atlantic in 1956.
Avis will be remembered as a gracious woman in the community as she and Maurice raised a talented, musical and loving family. She attended the United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed homemaking, her neighborhood circle and the Women's Lotus Rebekah Lodge #87. Avis's favorite hobbie was crocheting doilies and afghans and she played the piano bar for her Church, Lodge, Atlantic Care Center and Heritage House.
Surviving Avis are her two daughters, Donnis Reed and husband Howard and Sharon Waag and husband Harold; a daughter-in-law, Lois Coomes and a son-in-law, Dorrell Lindmark. She had eleven grandchildren, Doug Caudie, Avis Pruin, Rita Knoll, Joella Phillips, Amy Phillips, Brad Phillips, Jolene Laugerman, Jeff Coomes, Lynnette Henning, Steven Waag and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; a son, Maurice Dean Coomes; a granddaughter, Janelle Rae Coomes; grandsons, Dennis James Caudle and Bruce Wayne Caudle; and a daughter Marilyn May Caudle Lindmark.
