Chet Moreland

Chet Moreland, 74, of Exira, Iowa, and formerly of Council Bluffs, died Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at his home on National Truckers Day, 10-4!

He was born on June 16, 1949, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Rita (Guthrie) Horswill.  To say he had an adventurous childhood with his siblings might be an understatement; they could be found wreaking havoc at any given time.  Chet loved to play Tarzan, complete with the sound effects, in the cottonwood trees that lined their property.  One of many stories was the time he got to swinging a little too much and hit the side of the house knocking over a cabinet inside.  With his siblings in tow, his mother grabbed a lawn chair and sat under the trees waiting (over 2 hours) for him to come down to reprimand him for his actions.  He attended Wilson Junior High and Thomas Jefferson High School.

On December 7, 1985, he was united in marriage to Perri Sue Pasquale.  The couple and family lived different places including Colorado, Arizona and Missouri before moving to Exira the week of Thanksgiving in 2008.

The freedom Chet said he felt behind the wheel of his semi was something he couldn’t fully explain.  He drove for Cornhusker Trucking, which was the freight side of Mayflower Moving Company.  Chet’s CB Handle was either Crazy Taz or Jim Beam.

Chet enjoyed watching NASCAR (Brad Keselowski, being who he rooted for) and the Kansas City Chiefs.  It became a family joke that he watched WWE and called it his “adult cartoons.”  The time he spent on the shore casting in a line at Littlefield made for some of his favorite memories; he said it was so peaceful due to the fact that there was no cell service.

He was a simple man who was always there for his family, even when others didn’t step up, he did.  Chet continued providing for his family even though somedays with his health issues it didn’t seem possible—he was a fighter.

Chet is survived by his wife of 37 years, Perri Moreland; children, Randy (Allyson) Pasquale, Lisa Riskowski, Teresa Pasquale, Robin Lott, Adam DeVault, Dawn Swagner, Toby and Shane; many grandchildren; brother, Randy (Sandy) Horswill; brother-in-law, Lann DeVault; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Moreland and Celeste Horswill; and numerous extended family and trucking buddies.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Rita Horswill; granddaughter, Ashlee Nicole Edahl; siblings, Thomas Horswill, Jr., Skip Moreland and Kathleen DeVault; nephew, Skipper Moreland; and best friend, Bobby Willis.

To honor Chet’s memory the family encourages online tributes of your favorite stories and photos on his guestbook at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.  Posts will be reviewed and uploaded within 24 hours.  A slideshow is available for viewing below.  The family will host a Celebration of Life gathering at a later date.
