Obituary for Ione Sue Callahan

Sue Callahan, 86, of Atlantic died peacefully on April 18, 2010 at Wesley Heritage House where she had been a resident for several months.Sue was born in Lost Springs, Kansas on September 25, 1923 to Harry and Norma Jean McCoy and had lived in Atlantic since 1963. She was an active member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.Living with her mother in Des Moines, Sue graduated from North High School in 1941. She married Dale H. Callahan, a Seaman 1/C in the US Navy, in 1944 and gave birth to their first son while living in Chicago in 1945. Sue and Dale moved to Des Moines after the war where she gave birth to their second son in 1948. Mrs. Callahan was a homemaker most of her adult life and she and her family moved to Atlantic in 1963 when Dale began work at Walnut Grove Products.After Dale passed away in 1972, Sue began work at Cass County Memorial Hospital where she worked until retirement in 1986. At the time of her retirement Sue was Department Head of Personnel and Public Relations. Mrs. Callahan hugely enjoyed her work at CCMH. Her social life in Atlantic revolved around her friends and Sue participated in several social groups and clubs in town. A life-long bridge player, she could still take money from her grandchildren without regret playing poker well into her 80"s.Mrs. Callahan was preceded in death by her husband Dale in 1972 and older son Michael Dale in 1997. She is survived by her son Timothy J. Callahan and his wife Jean of Ventura, California, grandsons Joseph T. Callahan of San Diego, California, Robert D. Callahan of Sacramento, California and James M. Callahan of Phoenix, Arizona and granddaughter Ryan E. Callahan of Phoenix, Arizona.Funeral InformationThere will be open visitation from 8:00 to 5:30 P.M. daily until a rosary will be said at Roland Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening, April 23. Following the rosary, Sue's family will remain to meet with relatives and friends until 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. Father Dan Siepker will officiate. All are invited to the graveside service to take place at the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
