Bernice May (McGaffin) Burnside
Bernice Burnside was born on May 2, 1914 north of Wiota, Iowa in Benton Township to Alex and Ida May (Schmitt) McGaffin. She and her family moved to Lewis in February 1923. She graduated with the Lewis High School Class of 1932. Bernice married Eldon Burnside on March 5, 1937 in Lewis. The couple raised their family while they farmed south of Lewis until 1964. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March of 1987. Eldon died two years later.
Bernice loved God with all she had, she loved family and neighbors with all she had, and she knew how to love herself appropriately.
Her great depth of love for her family includes her three children; Gary Eldon, James Edward, and Alex William; one daughter-in-law Kathy; six grandchildren, Greg Burnside and his wife Amy, Julie Wise and her husband Dick, Anna Hughes and her husband Jim, Allison Wagner and her husband Travis, Dara Coffey and her husband Dan, and Katie Wagner and her husband Patrick; fourteen great grandchildren, Cody Michael, Kayli Elaine, Sawyer Wilbur, Garrett James, Drake James, Kade Nicholas, Julianna Madelyn, Benjamin Alex, Ellen Kay, Thomas Wade, Bernice Vivian, Margaret Katherine, Hailee Morgan, Holden Patrick; and many friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Eldon in 1989; her daughter Carmen May in 1961; her parents, Alex and Ida McGaffin in 1966; her sisters Belva Smiley in 2004 and Beulah Marshall in 2006 and Betty Sanny in 2012.
