ALAN JAMES BURKE
Alan James Burke, 70, of Denver, Colorado died Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Village at Lowry in Denver, from complications associated with Supranuclear Palsy.
Alan James Burke was born on December 4, 1942 in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Gail and Janet (Schafer) Burke of Anita, Iowa. He graduated from Anita High School in 1961, the University of Notre Dame in 1965, and the University of Iowa in 1968.
He married Rita Hughes on September 3, 1966 in Casey, Iowa. Alan began his banking career with Norwest Bank in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1970. In 1976 he purchased a controlling interest in Farmers State Bank and moved his young family to Hawarden, Iowa. Alan and Rita moved to Denver upon the sale of the Farmers State Bank to Peoples Band in 2007.
Alan was an original board member on the Hawarden Community Hospital Foundation and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Bankers Mortgage Corporation. He was an active member in his Church and other civic organizations. He was a proud son of Iowa.
Alan is survived by his wife, Rita of Denver; his mother, Janet Burke of Atlantic; a brother, Barry (Mary Lou) of Boston, Massachusetts; a sister, Susan (Craig) Smith of Atlantic; a brother-in-law, Jim (Rita) Hughes of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his four children, Sean (Carmen) Burke of Pasadena, California, Erin Vogel of Denver, Colorado Tom (Cheryl) Burke of Stewartsville, New Jersey, and Michael (Jaime) Burke of Omaha, Nebraska; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gail Burke, a sister, Sarah Burke; and a brother, Kevin Burke.
The family asks that donations may be made to the West Sioux Educational Foundation in honor of the deceased.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Denver. A committal service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa—with reception to follow at the Catholic Parish Center.
