Obituary for George A. Brown

George Brown, 95, a long-time area resident, passed away in his sleep at Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa on Thursday morning, March 31, 2011. George was born, the son of Roy and Nellie Brown, on May 14, 1915, on a farm near Bridgewater, Iowa. He attended the Bridgewater schools and eventually farmed with his father for awhile. On November 16, 1935, he married Esther Kathryn Sorensen at Atlantic, Iowa. He farmed a few years, until in 1938 he made a decision to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. George joined the Massena Baptist Church and in 1941 felt the Lord calling him into the ministry - at which time he moved with his wife to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he entered Bible Missionary Training School to prepare for the ministry. On April 22, 1942 a daughter, Marie Kathryn, was born to George and Esther. World War II had broken out and George was drafted into the United States Army. He entered Military Police School and became a military policeman. He had the privilege of guarding General Dwight Eisenhower's private airplane. He received an honorable discharge from the army in 1946 and moved to Kentucky to enter Bible Training School near Pineville, Kentucky. He was ordained to the ministry and pastored his first church at Kettle Island, Kentucky following graduation. The couple then moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee where George entered Tennessee Temple Bible College to receive his bachelor of Bible and Graduate of Theology degrees. While at college, George did mountain mission work in Tennessee and Kentucky. They moved back to Iowa from where he pastored several churches in both Iowa and Illinois. When his health forced him to retire, he continued to fill pulpits in churches where he was needed. George also maintained his own gospel tract ministry which he enjoyed so much. He served the Lord faithfully until the Lord called him to his Heavenly Home.
