Obituary for Alan Brown

Alan Dale Brown, age 51, of rural Cumberland, Iowa passed away Monday, August 15, 2011, at the Cass County Hospice Center in Atlantic, Iowa. Alan was born on November 6, 1959 to Dennis Dean and Karen Maxine (Bruner) Brown in Corning, Iowa. He attended Cumberland-Massena Community School and was a member of the Class of 1978. On September 3, 2005, Alan was united in marriage to Shirley May Kuesel- Blaine. He enjoying spending time with family and friends and also liked to go fishing and ride his Harley Davidson which brought him endless miles of enjoyment. Al knew no strangers and will be remembered by all as a good hearted, fun-loving guy always ready to crack a joke. He worked various construction and truck driving jobs and was employed by the 21st Century Coop for 15 years. Al always had an encouraging word for everyone and always took time to lend a helping hand. As time passed, Al's faith grew stronger. He took great comfort in the knowledge and assurance of God's love and grace. He is survived by his wife Shirley of Cumberland; two stepsons, Chris (Lindsay) Blaine of Massena, IA and Jake Blaine (Judy Smith) of Massena, IA; three step grandchildren, Natalie, Nellie and Dylan Blaine; his father, Dennis Brown of Cumberland, IA; maternal grandmother, Maxine Bruner of Atlantic; two sisters, Julie (Jerry) Edwards of Cumberland, IA and Lila (Darren) Lassen of Red Oak, IA.; niece, Laurie Vogl (Brian Driscoll) of Kansas City, MO; three nephews, Waylon (Gretchen) Vogl of Des Moines, IA, Willie Vogl, currently serving with the U.S. Army at Camp Liberty, Iraq, and Charlie Lassen of Red Oak, IA; great nieces, Patience Vogl of Roanoke, TX and many aunts, uncles, cousins and a legion of wonderful friends. Alan is preceded in death by his mother, Karen Brown; paternal grandparents George and Burnidette Doty Brown and maternal grandfather Leland Bruner. There will be an open visitation daily at the Roland Funeral Home from 1:00 to 5:30 on Tuesday, August 16 and from 8:00 to 5:30 on Wednesday and Thursday, August 17 & 18. There will be a visitation with family on Friday morning, August 19, at the Cumberland Community Center from 9:00 to10:00 am with services for Alan to follow at 10:30 am. Pastor Mel Smith from the Elliott Church of Christ will officiate with the committal in the Newlon's Grove Cemetery south of Cumberland. A lunch will follow at the Cumberland Community Building.
