Fred Brooks

Fred E. Brooks, 86, of Atlantic, Iowa passed away Sunday, September 16, 2001, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The son of Fred and Lydia (McGuire) Brooks, Fred was born October 16, 1914 in Council, Idaho. In 1919 his family moved to Cherokee, Iowa where he attended school. After school he went to work at the newspaper office and in the onion fields to help support his family. In 1937, Fred joined the United States Army and moved to Fort Crook in Omaha, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Agnes Foltz on January 17, 1940 in Omaha. He retired from the Army in 1957 and became the owner of Brooks Paint Store in Atlantic. When he retired he enjoyed woodworking, traveling to Texas and reading. Fred was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Atlantic Elks Club and the Atlantic Lions Club. He became a resident of the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in February of 1997.Surviving are his wife Agnes M. Brooks of Atlantic; three sons, Robert E. Brooks of Lindenhurst, Illinois, Richard B. Brooks and his wife Caroline of Corpus Christi, Texas and Thomas F. Brooks of Midlothian, Virginia; three stepsons, Andy Rex of Corpus Christi, Texas, Jon Brooks of Brownsville, Texas and Matt Brix of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, Laura and Deena Brooks; two sisters, Leona Lockin of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Bell Gross of Denver, Colorado; one brother Marian Brix and his wife Faye of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Jay Brooks; and three sisters, Daisy, Christina, and Naomi Brooks.Roland Funeral Service -- Atlantic, IowaFuneral InformationA funeral mass will be held for Fred on Thursday, September 20, 2001, at 10:30 AM at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa with Msgr.
