Obituary for
Betty Jane Brake
BETTY JANE BRAKE
Betty Brake, 81, long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.
Betty Brake, the daughter of Earl Henry and Pearl Edith (Hudson) Cavner, was born April 1, 1932, in Rockport, MO. She attended the Hamburg, Iowa Public School.
Betty was united in marriage to Deward Lee Brake on March 23, 1949 in Hamburg, Iowa. The couple soon moved to Atlantic where they made their home. Betty worked at the Blue Star a number of years but spent the majority of her time as a housekeeper, helping with cleaning homes.
Most of all, Betty enjoyed raising her children and being with her grandkids. Being friendly and good natured, she enjoyed people where ever she went. If she was out shopping, it was common that she would visit with several folks—adults and kids, as it was so easy for her to make friends. In fact, some of the cards that she received summed it up, as her son quoted some reading, “You have a special way of making others feel cared for . . . .” and, “You have a special gift for making others feel loved and you’re one in a million.”
Betty had fun collecting pigs of all kinds, and most of all, enjoyed raising her two sons and helping those less fortunate. She attended the First Assembly of God Church in Atlantic.
Her survivors include her son, Darrel Brake and wife Leola of Topeka, Kansas; four grandchildren, Dawn Wake (Donnie’s daughter) and sons-in-law, Jim Wake of Clarinda, IA, Darren Brake of Meriden KS, Chad and Shannon Brake of McPherson, KS, Thomas Jay (TJ) and Maurene Brake of Burlingame, KS; 11 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Carson, Riley, Jade, Macey, Cory, Emily, Kendall, Regan, Dyllan and Jaelynn; brothers and sisters, Larry Cavner of St. Louis, MO, Donald Cavner of MT, and Becky and Amy LaBranch, and Isabelle Porter: special friend, Kenny Wester; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Deanna Byers, Charlie McGuire, and Neoma Brake; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Deward Brake; her son, Donnie Brake; her parents; brother, Billie Cavner; and sisters, Marjorie Binns, Roberta Boyd, Shirley and Willis Price, Darla Cavner, and Helen Cavner; and her sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, Duane Brake, Dean Brake, Delzene McGuire, and Charlotte Brake.
Betty’s funeral service will be held at First Assembly of God at 10:30am on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Pastor Guy Fisher will officiate. The committal service will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Family will meet with relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7pm, January 14.
