Obituary for Lawrence Emil Blunk

LAWRENCE EMIL BLUNK Lawrence Emil Blunk, age 90, a long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa passed away Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic. Lawrence Emil Blunk was born to Werner Blunk and Dora (Bebensee) Blunk in Cass County on August 18, 1917. He attended school in Wiota, Iowa and graduated from the Wiota High School. On June 9, 1946, Lawrence was united in marriage to Helen Elaine Nielsen and she joined him in farming. Through the years, they farmed on different farms, one in Audubon County and several in Cass County, until 1978 when they moved into Atlantic, retiring from full time farming for health reasons. They have wintered in Arizona the last 31 years. He made many close friends that loved him like family down there. He continued farming part time until 1996. Lawrence was a member of Gideons International, Kiwanis, the Odd Fellows Lodge, Extension Board, the Wiota United Methodist Church and was Soil District Commissioner and later the Regional State Commissioner. He enjoyed music, dancing, bowling and entertaining at nursing homes, churches and gatherings with his accordion and harmonica accompanied by Helen on piano and/or harmonica. His favorite things were music, polishing cars and machinery, coffee with friends and meeting new people. He liked the Rocky Mountains and they took many family vacations there. He also enjoyed visiting family and friends in Australia. Lawrence was a man of diplomacy and integrity. He was fun-loving and loved his family and the land. These were some manifestations of his love for the Lord. Lawrence is survived by his wife Helen; four daughters, Vicki Hurlbutt of Waynesville, MO, Linda Power and husband Jon Pratlett from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Janet Burton and husband Darrell of Omaha, NE and Julie Lennox and husband Allan of Kandanga, Queensland, Australia; two brothers, a twin Leonard Blunk and wife Maxcine and Norman Blunk and wife Maxine, all of Atlantic; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Blunk of Atlantic and Marilyn Blunk of Kansas City, MO; eleven grandchildren, Terri Macon & husband Roger of Waynesville, MO, Jim Hurlbutt and wife Teresa of Kalispell, MT, Gavin Power of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Melissa Power of Mudjimba, Queensland, Australia, Jason Burton and wife Danica of Omaha, NE, Noah Burton of Lincoln, NE, Jon Burton of Omaha, NE, Zach Burton of Omaha, NE, Daniel Lennox of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, Joshua Lennox of Medowie, New South Wales, Australia and Sally Bleijie and husband Jarrod of Little Mountain, Queensland, Australia; eight great grandchildren, Lisa, Nicole and Tori Macon, Orrin and Monice Hurlbutt, Taylor and Madison Bleijie and Cyrus Lennox; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Werner and Dora and a stepmother Minnie Blunk; brothers, Wayne, Arnold, Donald and Roger; son-in-law Bill Hurlbutt. Services for Lawrence will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at 10:30 A.M. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with Pastor Bonnie Peterson from the Wiota United Methodist Church officiating. The interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
