Obituary for Wilma P. Blake (Matheny)

Wilma P. Blake, 92, entered into the House of the Lord on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.

Wilma was born to Don and Elsie (Lantz) Matheny on December 1, 1922, near Blockton, Iowa. She had a brother, Cecil and a sister, Norma who died at an early age from Multiple Sclerosis. Following graduation from Blockton High School she married Charles Blake on August 16, 1940, in Maryville, Missouri. They lived most of their lives in the Blockton and Atlantic, Iowa, areas with brief residences in Denver, Colorado and California, while Charles was in the military.

Wilma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic where she was an active member of United Methodist Women's Circle. Wilma was a dedicated wife, a true homemaker, although she worked part time for a few years at the Crabtree Printing Co., in Atlantic.

Her sons will always remember her generosity of sending baked goods and many food items to their homes after family gatherings. She was an extremely loving and caring mother-in-law and forever respected and supported their lives with her sons. Wilma looked forward to and loved the traditional family reunions that were held around Father's Day weekend annually. She often requested that this tradition continue in the future.

She and her husband took on the challenge of buying houses, renovating and decorating them for resale. Wilma was quite possibly the only five-foot tall woman that could wallpaper a ceiling single-handedly. The couple looked forward to card games with friends. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Wilma loved her family and will be deeply missed by her sons, Richard and his wife, Norma of Hollister, Missouri, Donald and his wife, Marcine of Stanton, Iowa, and Walter and his wife, Donnis of Norwalk, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Matheny of Topeka, Kansas; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She is preceded is death by her husband of 57 years, Charles; parents, Don and Elsie Matheny; sister, Norma Hipsher; and brother, Cecil.

Open visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 8th and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday, November 9th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. No visitation with the family is planned.

Graveside services will be 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 10th at the Blockton Cemetery in Blockton, Iowa.
