VIOLET MAY BLAKE Violet May (Spies) Blake, a life long Atlantic, Iowa resident, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, July 29, 2010, at the Heritage House in Atlantic at the age of 97. Violet was born to John and Dolly (Barnholt) Spies on May 28, 1913 in Atlantic.She attended Lincoln elementary school in Atlantic and graduated from the Atlantic High School. On July 6, 1931, Violet was united in marriage to Bruce D. Blake in Atlantic, Iowa. She was employed by the J.C. Penney store in Atlantic for 20 years. Violet"s hobbies were playing cards and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling and cooking for her family. Surviving Violet are her daughter, Linda Pibarot and husband Jaque of Paris, France; two sons, Bart Blake and wife Janice of Atlantic and Larry Blake and wife Diane of Aurora, CO; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Hanna Thompson, Ruby Rice and Irma Fisher; and one brother Henry Spies.Funeral InformationAn open visitation will be held at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa Saturday and Sunday, July 31 and August 1 from 12:00 to 5 P.M.; Monday and Tuesday, August 2 and 3 from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M; and Wednesday, August 4 from 8:00 A.M. until the family will be present prior to the funeral service from 1:00 – 1:45 P.M.. The funeral service for Violet will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 4. Pastor Nancy Jensen from the United Church of Christ will officiate and interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
