CLIFFORD THEODORE BERRY

Clifford Theodore Berry, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa.

He was the son of Jasper Newton (Bud) and Bertha Ida Pross Berry and was born September 9, 1922 in Atlantic, Iowa. They lived on a small farm just east of Atlantic. Clifford attended Grove City No. 2 School and the Atlantic High School.

H served over three years in the United States Army during World War II with the 86th Division which was a part of General George S. Patton's 3rd Army Division in Europe. When the war ended in Europe on May 8, 1945, the 86th Division was sent to the Pacific Theater to prepare for the invasion of Japan, which never came about due to the dropping of the atomic bombs. He was stationed in the Philippines until he was honorably discharged on March 8, 1946 with the rank of T4 Sergeant. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with a bronze star, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, the World War II Victory Ribbon and a Special Citation Badge he wore on his right sleeve.

He returned to his home town where he met Leah Mae Namanny. They were married on June 9, 1947 and have lived in Atlantic since that date.

Clifford was employed at Hoegh Oil Co. for 10 years, Lamberty's Radiator Service three years and Cass County Highway Dept. for 28 years, where he was District-2 Foreman for 17 years retiring on Dec. 31st, 1984.

Clifford was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, Merry Marrieds and had been an active member of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. He volunteered for delivery of Meals On Wheels and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He will be remembered for his love of his family, his kindness, honesty and for always doing his share of work no matter what the job called for. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years and keeping the yard and garden neat. One of his favorite hymns was "In the Garden." He and his wife enjoyed going to basketball games and playing cards with friends.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Leah Mae; parents, "Bud" and Bertha Berry; sister, Dema Lund; brother-in-law, Raymond Lund and granddaughter, Brittney Amber Berry.

Surviving are two sons, James E. Berry of Atlantic, Iowa and Keith L. Berry of Clarinda, Iowa; granddaughter, Kristin Lynn Berry of Maryville, Missouri; two nephews, Kenneth Lund of Fairfield, Ohio and Richard Lund of Milford, Iowa; and a niece, Janet (Alan) Thompson, South Sioux City, Nebraska; as well as other relatives and friends.
