Bernard Grubbs

Bernard Grubbs, 90, of Adair, Iowa passed away Friday morning, October 15, 2021, at Creston Specialty Care in Creston, Iowa.

Bernard Grubbs was born August 24, 1931, in rural Berkley, Iowa, to Allen and Clara (Fries) Grubbs. He attended Adair School until his sophomore year at which time he left school to help on the family farm.

He married Marjorie Kirchhoff on March 2, 1952, in the Methodist Parsonage in Lewis. Following their marriage, Bernard and Marjorie lived south of Adair and two years later moved north of Atlantic. His Adair roots kept calling and in 1958 they returned to their current home south of Adair. Marjorie passed away in 2007, and in 2008 he married Dorothy Baxter. After Dorothy’s passing Bernard lived at home until he was hospitalized a month before he passed.

Bernard was a full-time farmer and father. He delivered mail, raised cattle, hogs, and one milk cow. Throughout Bernard’s life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, attending his children’s sporting events, farm auctions, church bazaars, going to fairs, playing cards, boating, dining out, family get-togethers, and talking with people he’d pass by. In recent years, he was often found sitting in his chair with a toothpick in his mouth and reading the paper while ignoring the loud television. His trade mark for food was salt, salt, and more salt and often mentioned the food was dry. He especially enjoyed spending time with his large family which consists of 9 children, 24 grandchildren, and 37 great grandchildren.
