Gerald (Jerry) Bert Behrens, 83, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of southwest Iowa, passed away May 18, 2020, at Ramsey Village in Des Moines, Iowa.
Jerry was born January 25, 1937, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Bertus and Laura (Tiarks) Behrens. He graduated from Shelby Consolidated School with the class of 1955. Jerry held a multitude of jobs in his lifetime including, but not limited to, mechanic, manager of the Shelby Dairy Queen, cowboy, farmer, salesman, and casino security. Hunting, guns and horses were some of his favorite hobbies.
Jerry is survived by his daughters, Jeri (Denny) Messenger of West Des Moines, formerly of Atlantic, Iowa; Julie (Dean) Klindt of Harlan; Jodie Fredericks of Iowa City. His grandchildren, Holly Messenger; Dusten (Ben) Pitkin; Drea Klindt; Daylon (Addie) Klindt; Drase Klindt; and one great-grandson, Kiran Valji. He is also survived by his brother, Kenneth (Rhoda) Niesz; niece, Tammy (Bill) Butler and nephew, Bill (Angie) Niesz; and other relatives and friends.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Aaron Messenger.
A private graveside celebration of life memorial service will be held at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Council Bluffs at a later date.
